Title: For Pope. L
Medium: Found Objects (Firehose, yellow street divider line, and house paint mounted on stretchers)
Year: 2024
Dimensions: 40" × 62" approx
"I began working on this piece the day that African American Conceptual Artist Pope L passed away. I had already committed the firehose and yellow street line to two separate pieces, but decided that they would best be suited for the purpose of being a momento mori for one of America's most ground-breaking and celebrated artists. There is an African Proverb (attributed) that states "When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.". Touching upon connotations associated with the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's through the use of the firehose and yellow street line, I wanted these objects to symbolically stand-in for the performative, experiential dimension of his work. Inspired by Theaster Gates's own firehose works I rotated mine 90° to assume a Portrait orientation. The firehose and paint line are seemingly wrapped around the stretchers as if they were the gauze bandages of a mummified person and assume the same color as well."—Spencer Hutchinson

Medium: Found Objects
Year: 2018
Location: Tom Robinson Gallery
Spencer: "This is little me, probably 1987 at the cottage in Spofford, New Hampshire. My life...it's so unlikely, so unusual, yet I firmly believe that it's my stalwart commitment to being ordinary that serves me best. I don't think that who I am or what I have lived through has made me more "special" than anyone else. My whole life has just been about finding where I belong, who my friends are, and how I can simply be myself, just like everyone else.
"Look in the mirror, that's where you'll find the real me, just like you."
