Sphinx of Black Quartz, Judge My Vow!

Chris Stroffolino

“You gave me more than I could ever need & even

created more needs just so you could fulfill them”

Is it true the closer you get to someone

the more of a mystery they are?

How can I render you free

in words like one or three

looking away looks like a way

the sound is happy, the meaning

moans, but I don’t mind

the discrepancy bees flirt
but you probably mean flit

as if beyond the kind of “I”

that needs a you to tell itself to...

& the temptation is strong to wear you like eyes....
to learn to let the sea of your polyvocal monologue
wash over me longer

so it tires us both out

as the artist formerly known as love

may appear in clothes you wear better

if almost everything you said

didn’t make we want to slow down

& insert a quip or question

really important at the time

for whatever is afraid to drown

in erasing words from all past uses

“When I’m writing about you

I’m really writing about me

or what would be me

if I stopped trying to call it you

or the heart or the soul or the body
or the mind, defining my _____

by address.”

Fixed?
adequate opposites

in a distance of becoming only different

from being if we catch ourselves

squinting, as if we have to be

indifferent enough

to be different enough to ________”

& if you think you got my number

I promise not to say how dare you reduce me
(& is it a problem if I feel closer

to someone’s mind than my own body?)
