What Happened Was Impossible

E. Briskin

in the sense that these things can’t happen,

like you opened a chest

and greek goddesses flew out

and what they did How many?

at least six. The greek goddesses,

what they did is, they were hungry

having been in a trunk A wood trunk?

wooden, yes, it was cedar and the first thing they did

was to dematerialize and re-corpus

themselves Where? at a restaurant.

What restaurant? it doesn’t matter What kind of restaurant?

a place with booths.

And then they sat How did they sit? well,

each goddess takes one

whole booth. And the people

You mean the waitstaff? and the people

who were in line, also the servers,

they all got angry. Because everyone always wants

Because everybody always wants a booth?            NOD.

And the goddesses took all the booths and the servers

brought out the menus, and the menus, when they held them,

they were glowing in the goddesses’ hands.

They were glowing? All six menus? well, more like

twelve. Twelve glowing menus? well, maybe

twice that. Twice twelve whole menus? well,

let’s see. Now there’s the drinks menu,

and then the specials, and it was twilight, so both lunch and

jesus. It’s impossible, and you ask menus. And they

were glowing? And they were glowing. And the people?

People glowed too. And then the restaurant The restaurant

closed? Right. It was impossible. It was impossible.

Like that.
